It is said that "A picture is worth a thousand words." The images shown here are of those former crew members who served on USS Tunny (SS 282) when she operated during World War II. During that time, Tunny conducted nine (9) combat war patrols with many of them on board for those patrols. In some cases, images of historical documents are also provided. For a complete history of Tunny, please click here which will take you to a link that describes information about the only book that presents a comprehensive history of this famous United States Navy submarine identified as Tunny 282. Some individuals have quite a number of photos, some not, and some are of them before they came to Tunny, and others taken of them after they left Tunny. The main source for the photos came from Tunny's Digital Archives. The individuals that have photos are listed in alphabetical order and the photos are arranged in time order. Some images resulted from further research using the Internet, communicating with relatives, family records, and newspapers. A BIG THANK YOU to all those who took the time to share the photos. Please note that the photographs shown were purposely resized from the original images. If you place your key board mouse over the photograph, it should result in showing the name of the individual identified or something about the image. While you are on the photo and you wish to have a copy, simply 'right click' on your mouse and you will be offered a selection to choose from such as "save as". As previously mentioned, most of the photos shown are from Tunny's digital archives, which are retained and maintained by former Tunny Engineman John Joseph Jenkins, Jr. "JJ" as he is known to many can provide digital CDs if requested. His email is: radrhino@cox.net. Should anyone having photographs of those who served on Tunny, please send them to JJ or myself and we will get them posted on the Internet as part of this unique Tunny Veteran tribute. George Ellis Pierce and his family
|
The photos shown below are of the unique Pierce family associated with the Tunny and the United States Submarine Force. George Ellis Pierce served as Tunny's (SS-282) third Commanding Officer. His older brother, John Reeves Pierce, served as the Commanding Officer of the USS Argronaut (APS-1 or SS-166), which was lost at-sea in the South Pacific on 10 January 1943. Their father, Claude Conner Pierce, Sr., leads this tribute, who also served as a significant public servant. An additional member of the Pierce family, John Taylor Pierce, who is the son of John Reeves Pierce, served on USS TUNNY (SSG-282). Claude Conner Pierce, Sr. (1878-1944)
