It is said that "A picture is worth a thousand words." The images shown here are of those former crew members who served on USS Tunny (SS, APSS and LPSS 282) when she operated during the Cold War and the Vietnam War periods. During this time, Tunny was redesignated several times after it completed its service as a Guided Missile Submarine (SSG) which ended in 1964. The Navy redesignated her from SSG to SS and after a conversion was redesignated as an APSS and later as an LPSS. The crew shown in this presentation are of those individuals who served on Tunny when it served as an SS (for the third time in its career), APSS, and LPSS. Tunny conducted fourteen deployments supporting Unconventional Warfare in Vietnam with many of those who were on board for those missions. For a complete history of Tunny, please click here which will take you to a link that describes information about the only book published that presents a comprehensive history of this famous United States Navy submarine identified as Tunny (SS, SSG, SS, APSS, and LPSS-282). Some of the individuals shown below have quite a number of photos, some not, and some are of them before they came to Tunny, and others taken of them after they left Tunny. A number of them also include photos taken on other ships and submarines they had served on. The main source for the photos came from Tunny's Digital Archives. The individuals that have photos are listed in alphabetical order and the photos are arranged in time order, left to right, as best that can be determined. Some images resulted from further research using the Internet, communicating with the individuals, their relatives, and other sources such as newspapers. A BIG THANK YOU to all those who took the time to share photos. Please note that the photographs shown were purposely resized from the original images. If you place your mouse over the photograph, it should result in showing the name of the individual identified or something about the image. While you are on the photo and you wish to have a copy of it, simply 'right click' on your mouse and you will be offered a selection to choose from such as "save as". As previously mentioned, most of the photos shown are from Tunny's digital archives, which are retained and maintained by former Tunny Engineman John Joseph Jenkins, Jr. "JJ" as he is known to many can provide digital CDs if requested. His email is: radrhino@cox.net. Should anyone having photographs of those who served on Tunny, please send them to JJ or myself and we will get them posted in this unique Tunny Veteran tribute. Ray Olszewski, Boat Yeoman, USS TUNNY (SSG-282) 1958-1962. |
