During the period February 1964 to October 1965, I served as a Yeoman Second Class Petty Officer assigned to the U.S. Naval Attache' offices working directly in support of the U.S. Air Attache, who were Colonel William A. Slade, USAF and Mario Sacripante, SSGT, USAF.  The collection of photographs posted on this page are from my archives that were taken during the time I served in Indonesia.

Following are artifacts I acquired while stationed in Djakarta.  On occasion, I would venture out to various historic sites to learn more about Indonesia and its culture.

Here are photos I took of one of two Buddha Heads I have in my possession that are believed to be from the Borobudur Temple located in Djogjakarta, Java Island, Indonesia in 1964/1965. Each head measures 9.75" h x 6"w x 7'd and weight 12 lbs each. I have held them in my possession since my acquisition.  Research on the Internet produced a couple of article relative to "missing Buddha Heads from Borobudur as follows:

(1) This first article was found at the following link which was an active and valid link through 6/14/2020. This article written by Vanessa R. Sasson discusses the decapitated buddha heads of Borobudur. https://www.buddhistdoor.net/features/decapitated-buddhas-at-borobudur.

(2) A second article was found at the following link https://magelangimages.wordpress.com/2014/0514/borobudurs-247-buddhas-still-losing-their-heads/.  This article written by Sahurdin discusses an entity Borobudue Conservation Agency (BKB) and the missing Buddha heads.

(3) A third article announced the work of Esther Von Plehwe Leisen to match missing heads to the Borobudur statues was found at: https://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2014/11/20/buddhas-be-reunited-with-their-heads.html. That link was also active through 6/14/2020.

As of 6/14/2020, I am attempting to find out if the Buddha heads I possess are the missing heads of Borobudur. The photos of me at the temple follow the Buddha Head images. Two others in the photos include my vehicle driver from Djakarta and a local tour guide.
